ความจริงควบคู่กับความรัก
1:1 ข้าพเจ้าผู้ปกครอง เรียนมายังท่านสุภาพสตรีที่ทรงเลือกสรรไว้ และบรรดาบุตรของนาง ผู้ซึ่งข้าพเจ้ารักในความจริงนั้น และมิใช่แต่ข้าพเจ้าเท่านั้น แต่บรรดาคนทั้งปวงที่ได้รู้จักความจริงด้วย

Truth and Love Go Together
1:1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

1:2 เพราะเห็นแก่ความจริง ซึ่งดำรงอยู่ในพวกเรา และจะดำรงอยู่กับพวกเราเป็นนิตย์

1:2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

1:3 ขอพระคุณ พระเมตตา และสันติสุขจากพระเจ้าพระบิดา และจากพระเยซูคริสต์เจ้าพระบุตรของพระบิดา สถิตอยู่กับท่านทั้งหลายในความจริงและความรัก

1:3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

1:4 ข้าพเจ้าปีติยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าได้พบบุตรทั้งหลายของท่านดำเนินในความจริง ตามที่พวกเราได้รับพระบัญญัติจากพระบิดาแล้ว

1:4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

1:5 และบัดนี้ ข้าพเจ้าขอวิงวอนท่าน ท่านสุภาพสตรี มิใช่ราวกับว่าข้าพเจ้าเขียนพระบัญญัติใหม่มาถึงท่าน แต่สิ่งซึ่งพวกเราได้มีมาแล้วตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก ว่าให้พวกเรารักซึ่งกันและกัน

1:5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

1:6 และนี่คือความรัก ที่พวกเราดำเนินตามบรรดาพระบัญญัติของพระองค์ นี่เป็นพระบัญญัตินั้นซึ่ง ตามที่พวกท่านได้ยินมาตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก พวกท่านควรจะดำเนินในพระบัญญัตินั้น

1:6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

อย่าร่วมสามัคคีธรรมกับผู้ที่ไม่ได้อยู่ในพระโอวาท
1:7 เพราะว่าผู้ล่อลวงเป็นอันมากได้เข้ามาในโลกแล้ว ผู้ซึ่งไม่กล่าวยอมรับว่าพระเยซูคริสต์ได้เสด็จมารับสภาพของเนื้อหนัง คนนี้แหละเป็นผู้ล่อลวงและเป็นปฏิปักษ์ต่อพระคริสต์

No Fellowship with Those Who Do Not Abide in the Word
1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

1:8 จงระวังพวกท่านเองให้ดี เพื่อพวกเราจะได้ไม่สูญเสียสิ่งเหล่านั้นที่พวกเราได้กระทำมาแล้ว แต่เพื่อพวกเราจะได้รับบำเหน็จเต็มที่

1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

1:9 ผู้ใดก็ตามที่ละเมิดและไม่ดำรงอยู่ในหลักคำสอนของพระคริสต์ ก็ไม่มีพระเจ้า ผู้ใดที่ดำรงอยู่ในหลักคำสอนของพระคริสต์ ผู้นั้นก็มีทั้งพระบิดาและพระบุตร

1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

1:10 ถ้ามีผู้ใดมาหาพวกท่านและไม่นำหลักคำสอนนี้มาด้วย อย่ารับเขาไว้ให้เข้ามาในบ้านของพวกท่าน และอย่าขอพระเจ้าอวยพรให้เขาเลย

1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

1:11 เพราะว่าผู้ที่ขอพระเจ้าอวยพรให้เขา ก็เป็นผู้เข้าส่วนในบรรดาการกระทำชั่วร้ายของเขานั้น

1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

1:12 โดยมีหลายเรื่องที่จะเขียนมาถึงพวกท่าน ข้าพเจ้าไม่อยากเขียนด้วยกระดาษและน้ำหมึก แต่ข้าพเจ้าหวังใจว่าจะมาหาพวกท่าน และสนทนากันหน้าต่อหน้า เพื่อความปีติยินดีของพวกเราจะเต็มเปี่ยม

1:12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

1:13 บรรดาบุตรของน้องสาวของท่านที่ได้ทรงเลือกสรรไว้ทักทายปราศรัยท่าน เอเมน

1:13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.
