ถ้าไม่มีพระเจ้าแล้ว การงานและสติปัญญาทั้งสิ้นของมนุษย์ก็เปล่าประโยชน์
1:1 บรรดาถ้อยคำของปัญญาจารย์ บุตรชายของดาวิด กษัตริย์ในกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม

Without God, All Human Works and Wisdom Are Vain
1:1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

1:2 อนิจจังแห่งอนิจจัง ปัญญาจารย์กล่าวว่า อนิจจังแห่งอนิจจัง สารพัดก็อนิจจัง

1:2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

1:3 มนุษย์ได้ประโยชน์อะไรจากงานหนักทั้งสิ้นของเขาที่เขาทำภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์

1:3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

สิ่งสารพัดที่น่าปรารถนาก็ล่วงไป
1:4 ชั่วอายุหนึ่งล่วงไป และอีกชั่วอายุหนึ่งก็มา แต่แผ่นดินโลกก็ยั่งยืนอยู่เป็นนิตย์

All Desirable Things Pass Away
1:4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

1:5 ดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้นด้วย และดวงอาทิตย์ตก และรีบไปถึงที่ของมันซึ่งมันได้ขึ้นมานั้น

1:5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

1:6 ลมพัดไปทางทิศใต้ และวนขึ้นไปทางทิศเหนือ ลมพัดวนไปเวียนมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง และลมพัดกลับมาอีกตามวงจรของมัน

1:6 The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

1:7 แม่น้ำทั้งสิ้นไหลลงไปในทะเล ถึงอย่างนั้นทะเลก็ไม่เคยเต็ม แม่น้ำทั้งหลายไหลมาจากที่ใด พวกมันก็กลับไปสู่ที่นั่นอีก

1:7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

1:8 สิ่งสารพัดก็เต็มไปด้วยความยากลำบากทั้งสิ้น มนุษย์เอ่ยมันออกมาไม่ได้ นัยน์ตาไม่อิ่มด้วยการมองเห็น และหูไม่เต็มด้วยการฟัง

1:8 All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

1:9 สิ่งที่เคยเป็นขึ้นแล้วคือสิ่งนั้นที่จะเป็นขึ้นอีก และสิ่งที่เคยทำกันแล้วคือสิ่งที่จะต้องทำกันอีก และไม่มีสิ่งใดใหม่ภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์

1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

1:10 มีสิ่งหนึ่งสิ่งใดหรือที่จะพูดถึงสิ่งนั้นได้ว่า “ดูซี สิ่งนี้ใหม่” สิ่งนั้นเคยมีอยู่มาก่อนแล้วในสมัยโบราณ ซึ่งอยู่ก่อนเราทั้งหลาย

1:10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

1:11 ไม่มีการจดจำถึงสิ่งใด ๆ ในสมัยก่อน และจะไม่มีการจดจำถึงสิ่งใด ๆ ที่จะเกิดขึ้น กับคนเหล่านั้นที่จะมาภายหลัง

1:11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

สติปัญญาและความรู้มากมายนำความเศร้าโศกและความเสียใจมาสู่เรา
1:12 ข้าพเจ้า ปัญญาจารย์ เคยเป็นกษัตริย์เหนืออิสราเอลในกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม

Much Wisdom and Knowledge Bring Grief and Sorrow
1:12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

1:13 และข้าพเจ้าได้ตั้งใจของข้าพเจ้าที่จะเสาะและแสวงหาโดยสติปัญญาเกี่ยวกับสิ่งสารพัดที่กระทำกันภายใต้ฟ้าสวรรค์ ความยากลำบากนี้พระเจ้าได้ประทานให้แก่บุตรทั้งหลายของมนุษย์เพื่อที่จะสาละวนกับมัน

1:13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

1:14 ข้าพเจ้าได้เห็นกิจการทั้งปวงซึ่งกระทำกันภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์ และดูเถิด สารพัดก็อนิจจังและเป็นความวุ่นวายใจ

1:14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

1:15 สิ่งที่คดจะทำให้ตรงไม่ได้ และสิ่งที่ขาดอยู่จะถูกนับให้ครบไม่ได้

1:15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

1:16 ข้าพเจ้าเคยคิดในใจของข้าพเจ้าเองว่า “ดูเถิด ข้าพเจ้าได้มาถึงฐานะที่สูงส่ง และได้มีสติปัญญามากกว่าใคร ๆ ที่เคยอยู่ก่อนข้าพเจ้าในกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม ใช่แล้ว ใจของข้าพเจ้ามีประสบการณ์อย่างมากกับสติปัญญาและความรู้”

1:16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

1:17 และข้าพเจ้าได้ตั้งใจของข้าพเจ้าที่จะรู้จักสติปัญญา และที่จะรู้จักความบ้าบอและความโง่เขลา ข้าพเจ้าได้เล็งเห็นว่าสิ่งนี้ก็เป็นความวุ่นวายใจด้วย

1:17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

1:18 เพราะในสติปัญญามากมายก็มีความเศร้าโศกมาก และคนที่เพิ่มความรู้ก็เพิ่มความเศร้าใจ

1:18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
